I started with Baptiste yoga 10 years ago and have been doing it almost exclusively since. You can definitely start as a beginner with the right instructors who teach modifications until you are ready to move into more advanced versions of poses (if you ever are - I still modify a lot of poses to suit my body's capabilities). I have learned more spiritually from this practice then I ever did in any church (just my experience, I wouldn't say that's true for everyone). It's all about what each individual gets out of his/her time on the mat - whatever type of yoga it is - that's what makes it yoga.
To be honest, my first ever experience in a yoga class, or yoga for that matter, was through a Baptiste-style. It wasn't easy, and the heat didn't help, but I learned so much and through my practice, it's done a lot for me spiritually. I've also grown to more advanced levels in Asanas that at the beginning, I thought would never be accessible for me.

It depends on the student too. I've tried some beginners lessons that were not relaxing but just boring. I need to be actively involved and alternating between sitting and standing for 30 minutes isn't enough to make me want more.
