It means that if you read it closely, it means when someone shows your there true self or who they really are you should listen too that the first time. notice the snakes as a metaphor for lairs but they cant hide there true selves.
If someone isn't being real, then you wouldn't know or see who they really are. I feel this quote means that when someone finally shows their true colors through circumstance and interaction, then believe in that part of them. it is the only thing that is true. be it good or bad. if someone proves to be a snake, don't give them excuses. learn the first time, basically.

Actually in the early stages of my relationship, I tend to pour out my dark side already. I wish to spend a lifetime with a person so I want her to know what she's getting into. It doesn't get worse, it gets better as we both grow and slowly fix the bad things. The problem with people is, very few know how to appreciate honesty.
